What Makes This Nursery Special
Natural Resources
At Ongar, our natural resources are carefully chosen to create a warm, grounded environment. We love how the simplicity of wooden toys, loose parts, and textured materials supports meaningful play, while also making the space feel calm, homely, and just right for little explorers.
Outside Area
At Ongar, the outdoor area is a true extension of the classroom. We love how it offers calm corners, active zones, and space to explore the seasons. Whether they’re practising physical skills or simply enjoying the fresh air, children have the chance to connect with nature and develop their confidence.
Homely Environment
Ongar feels like a home from home. What we love most is the way children are given time and space to grow at their own pace. It’s a place where children can dig into messy play, enjoy meaningful interactions, and build the confidence they’ll carry with them into school and beyond.

What they learn
Our Learning Approach
Areas of Learning
Through warm, responsive relationships, we support children’s personal, social and emotional development, helping them feel secure and confident. We encourage communication and language through meaningful interactions, while physical development is supported through active indoor and outdoor play that builds coordination, independence and confidence.
Specific Areas of Learning
We support early literacy and maths through play, stories, songs and everyday experiences that build understanding naturally. Children explore the world around them and express themselves creatively through hands-on activities that encourage curiosity, imagination and problem-solving.
Learning Through Play
Learning at Step Start is led through play that is purposeful, engaging and enjoyable. Carefully planned environments and thoughtful interactions allow children to follow their interests, build independence and develop confidence, while having fun and feeling motivated to learn.
Understanding Child Development
Birth to 5 Matters supports our understanding of how children develop at different stages. It helps us recognise each child as an individual and appreciate that development looks different for every child.
Observing and Planning
We use Birth to 5 Matters to observe, assess and plan experiences that reflect children’s interests, needs and next steps. This ensures learning is meaningful, responsive and shaped around each child.
Child-Centred Progression
By recognising that development is not linear, we support children in a flexible, child-centred way. This approach promotes emotional security, curiosity and a love of learning, allowing children to progress confidently at their own pace.
Childhood Comes First
We believe children only get one childhood, and it should be filled with joy, curiosity and meaningful moments. At Step Start, we value play, relationships and emotional wellbeing as much as academic learning.
Safe, Nurturing Spaces
We create calm, welcoming environments where children feel safe to be themselves. When children feel secure and supported, they are more confident to explore, take risks and develop a strong sense of who they are.
Following the Child
By slowing down and following children’s interests, we allow learning to happen naturally. We celebrate every milestone, big or small, ensuring each child’s childhood is respected, protected and truly celebrated.

Meet the Management Team
Michelle - Nursery Manager
I qualified as a Level 3 practitioner back when I was 19… quite a few years ago now! I’ve always found it incredible to watch babies grow into toddlers and preschoolers, knowing I’ve played a part in that journey, it’s so rewarding. Fun fact: I’ve never actually left this building! I’ve worked for 4 different nurseries, all within these same walls, and it’s been amazing to see how things have evolved over the years. I’m passionate about giving children real-life, hands-on experiences they might not get elsewhere. And one thing about me? I’ll always take the stairs - don’t ask me to get in a lift!
Kate - Deputy Manager
I began my career in childcare at 16, gaining my Level 2 and 3 qualifications before moving into management in 2010. Along the way, I completed a Foundation Degree and a BA Honours in Early Years. After taking time out to raise my children, I spent seven years in a local school, progressing to SEN Welfare LSA and Lexia Lead - roles I loved and learned so much from. I joined Step Start as a Room Leader, and since then have progressed into the role of Deputy Manager. I’m passionate about giving children rich, creative learning experiences and encouraging a love of reading. I’m bright, bubbly, and always up for making learning fun!
