Potty Training: What to Expect

There’s no one-size-fits-all potty plan, but with patience, encouragement and the right timing, you and your child will get there together.

Potty training is a milestone many parents feel unsure about, and that’s completely normal. There’s no single “right” way to do it, and no perfect age to start. Every child is different, and at Step Start, we’ve supported many families through this transition with care, patience and a good sense of humour!

Is your child ready?
Rather than watching the calendar, look for signs of readiness in your child:

  • Staying dry for 1-2 hours
  • Showing interest in the toilet or potty
  • Hiding to wee or poo
  • Pulling at a wet nappy
  • Telling you when they’re going
  • Wanting to be more independent

If you notice a few of these signs consistently, it could be time to gently introduce the idea!

How we support potty training at Step Start

  • Partnership with parents - we’ll work with you to follow your child’s routine, whether you’re just starting out or well underway.
  • Gentle encouragement - no pressure, just positivity and praise for every effort.
  • Independence - we involve children in self-care (pulling down trousers, washing hands)
  • Consistency - we use clear, simple language and regular reminders.
  • Celebration - even small steps like “sitting on the potty” are worth cheering for!

Tips for supporting potty training at home

  • Stay calm and positive - accidents are part of the process!
  • Dress for success - choose clothes they can easily pull up and down.
  • Build a routine - try regular potty times after meals or before bathtime.
  • Use stories and books - they help normalise the experience.
  • Praise effort, not just results - even sitting down on the potty is a win!
  • Don’t rush - some children take to it quickly, others need more time and that’s ok.

Patience is key - and we’re here to help!
Potty training isn’t always smooth, and that’s ok. There might be accidents, resistance, even a few setbacks. But with consistency and support, your child will get there. And Step Start will be with you every step of the way - cheering you both on from the sidelines.
