About us
At Step Start, we believe children are full of potential — ready to imagine, to create, and to do incredible things from the very beginning.
Why Step Start
Our Mission
At Step Start, we believe children are full of potential, curiosity and imagination. Childhood is precious, and we never forget that children only get one. Our purpose is simple but powerful: to ensure every child leaves Step Start feeling confident, inspired and excited about their next steps.
We create warm, positive environments where children feel safe to be themselves, build relationships and explore the world around them. Our nurseries are filled with opportunities to play, discover and imagine, allowing children to grow in confidence as they learn through meaningful experiences that truly matter to them.
We want every child to be ready for what comes next, without ever losing the joy of being a child. That is why we have created our own School Readiness and Phonics programme, carefully designed to support children as they develop the skills, independence and self-belief they need to move on with confidence. This approach ensures children are prepared for school in a way that feels natural, supportive and child-led.
We work closely with families, building strong, trusting partnerships along the way. Parents can feel reassured knowing their child is cared for by dedicated professionals who are passionate about giving them the very best start in life.
Because Childhood Matters.
Because Confidence Lasts.
Because They Only Get One Childhood.
Why Step Start
Our Values
Explore with purpose
We believe the most meaningful learning happens when children are free to explore, follow their curiosity and make sense of the world in their own way. At Step Start, exploration is guided with care and intention, allowing children to build confidence as they try new things, solve problems and discover what they are capable of. Through play, outdoor experiences and thoughtfully planned activities, children learn that their ideas matter and that it is safe to be curious.

Experience in the moment
Children thrive when they feel truly seen, heard and supported. We value the importance of being present with children, creating calm, connected environments where relationships come first. By slowing down and responding to children in the moment, we help them feel secure, understood and confident to express themselves. These shared experiences form the foundations for emotional wellbeing, communication and a lifelong love of learning.

Strong, nurturing relationships with trusted adults
-
Support for emotional development and communication

Learning that grows naturally from everyday moments
Empower from within
We believe confidence grows from within when children are trusted, supported and encouraged to believe in themselves. At Step Start, we empower children to make choices, develop independence and take pride in their achievements. Our carefully designed environments and routines help children feel capable and valued, building the self-belief they need to move forward with confidence, including their transition to school.

Why Step Start
Our Commitment
At Step Start, we believe every child is full of potential, curiosity and imagination. From the very beginning, we are committed to nurturing each child as an individual and supporting them to grow with confidence, kindness and a strong sense of self.
Our commitment is to create environments where children feel safe, valued and inspired to explore. Through play, care and meaningful experiences, we support children to develop not only key skills, but also the confidence to express themselves, build relationships and believe in who they are becoming.
We want every child to leave Step Start feeling ready for their next step, secure in themselves and proud of what they can do. By working in partnership with families, we ensure each child is supported consistently, thoughtfully and with genuine care.
Because when a child believes in themselves, it shapes the way they learn, connect and grow.
One Child. One Moment. One Childhood, Nurtured With Purpose.

Robert
CEO and Co-Founder
I’m the co-founder of Step Start Nurseries and a passionate advocate for giving children the best possible start in life. With a background in building purposeful, value-led businesses, I launched Step Start in 2017, alongside my wife Danielle, with a clear belief: children only have one childhood, and it should be a positive, inspiring time where they’re encouraged to believe they can do anything. Our purpose-built nurseries now care for over 600 children, each designed to offer a safe, nurturing environment that supports learning, confidence, and creativity. As a father myself, I’m personally committed to ensuring every child feels valued, supported, and ready to thrive.

Danielle
Education Director and Co-Founder
As co-founder of Step Start Nurseries I've always been passionate about working with children and have built my career around helping them learn, grow, and thrive. With a teaching degree, EYPS qualification, and a PGCE, I spent four years in infant education before moving into Early Years, where my love for giving children the best start truly began. At Step Start, I developed our School Readiness Programme, drawing on my reception teaching experience to bridge common gaps before school. I also lead on phonics and oversee our educational provision, making sure every child experiences engaging, high-quality learning. As a mum of three, I bring both professional knowledge and real-life experience to everything I do.

Sophie
Childcare Director
My role is all about making sure our nurseries run smoothly, our teams feel supported, and most importantly, our children get the very best start. Day-to-day, I’m involved in everything from compliance and quality standards to staff culture and parent partnerships. But at the core of it all is one goal: creating a place where children can thrive and families feel genuinely part of their child’s journey. I’m passionate about making those early years as meaningful as possible, through exciting opportunities, purposeful environments, and empowering our teams to grow with confidence. When our practitioners feel supported, they can give their very best to the children in their care, and that’s when the real magic happens.

Louise
Operations Director
I lead operations at Step Start Nurseries, combining my background in health, wellbeing, and business management with a long-standing passion for early years education. I actually began my career as a nursery practitioner, and it was during that time I discovered just how powerful those early years are in shaping a child’s future. Now, I focus on creating high-quality, nurturing environments across all our settings, places where children feel safe, confident, and excited to learn. I believe every child deserves the chance to thrive, and that begins with strong foundations built through care, connection, and inspiring experiences. It’s a real privilege to support our incredible teams in delivering the kind of early education that truly makes a difference.
