Understanding Your Child’s Development
Because every child grows in their own way, at their own pace - and that’s more than ok!
It’s natural to wonder if your child is “on track”. You might hear other parents talk about first words, toilet training, or learning numbers - and suddenly feel unsure about your own child’s progress. But here’s the truth: development isn’t a race. It’s a journey, and it looks different for every child.
At Step Start, we take a whole-child approach - celebrating each stage, recognising each step and supporting every child to grow in a way that’s right for them.
What does “typical development” even mean?
Developmental milestones (like walking, talking, sharing) give us helpful markers, but they’re not deadlines. Children may be ahead in one area and slower in another, and that’s completely normal.
There are many ways children learn and grow:
- Socially - forming friendships, expressing feelings
- Physically - climbing, jumping, fine motor skills
- Emotionally - managing big feelings, self-soothing
- Cognitively - problem solving, asking questions, early maths
- Communicatively - listening, speaking, understanding
We look at the full picture - not just one piece.
How we support development at Step Start:
- We follow the Birth to 5 Matters and EYFS frameworks, while focusing on the individual child.
- We observe through play and interaction, not testing.
- We create toiled next steps based on your child’s interests.
- We share updates with you regularly, so you always know how your child is growing.
- We support early identification when additional needs arise, and walk that journey with you.
How you can support your child’s development at home:
- Talk and listen - language develops through everyday conversations.
- Play - the most natural (and powerful) way for children to learn.
- Encourage independence - even small tasks like dressing or pouring water help build confidence.
- Offer praise for effort, not just outcomes.
- Avoid comparisons - focus on your child’s journey, not someone else’s timeline.
There’s no rush - just growth
Every child is unique. Some walk early and talk late. Some love books, others love to climb. The most important thing is that they feel safe, loved, and supported as they explore the world around them. And that’s exactly what we’re here to provide.
