Supporting Children with Additional Needs at Nursery
Every child deserves to feel seen, understood and celebrated - just as they are.
At Step Start, we believe that inclusion isn’t just a policy - it’s a daily practice rooted in empathy, flexibility and genuine connection. Some children may need a little more support to thrive, whether that’s with speech, sensory processing, social interactions or physical development. We’re here to work alongside you, to notice the little things, and to create a nurturing environment that supports every child’s unique journey.
What does “additional needs” mean?
It can include a wide range of support areas, from speech delays, sensory sensitivities, or social communication differences, to diagnosed conditions like autism, ADHD, or physical and medical needs. Not every child has a formal diagnosis, and that’s ok. We focus on what your child needs to feel safe, included and confident.
How we support children with additional needs at Step Start:
- A strong key person system, ensuring deep connection and consistency
- Early identification, our experienced team is trained to notice early signs and gently raise concerns in partnership with parents
- Tailored support plans, created with you and adapted over time
- Working with external professionals (Speech & Language, Occupational Therapy, SENDCo)
- Sensory-friendly areas and flexible routines
- Visuals, Makaton and communication strategies to suit every learner
- Most importantly, a nurturing team that sees the whole child, not just their challenges
How you can support the journey at home:
- Keep communication open, we’re here to listen and support, without judgement
- Share what works well at home, routines, words, calming strategies
- Be kind to yourself, parenting a child with additional needs is rewarding, but it can feel overwhelming at times
- Remember: small steps count, progress isn’t always linear
We’re in this together!
Whether your child already has a diagnosis or you’re just starting to ask questions, know that you’re not alone. At Step Start, we celebrate every child’s strengths, honour their differences, and create a space where they can shine in their own way, at their own pace.
