What is a Key Worker - And Why That Relationship is So Important
The bond between your child and their key person isn’t just policy - it’s the heart of how we care.
When your child joins a nursery, one of the first things you’ll hear about is their key worker, or as we often call them, their key person. But what does that really mean?
Your child’s key person is more than just their main carer. They’re their safe space. Their cheerleader. Their guide through the nursery day. And for you, they’re a trusted partner in your child’s learning, wellbeing and progress.
So… what is a key person?
A key person is a named member of staff who has special responsibilities for a small group of children. They get to know your child deeply - their likes, dislikes, routines and emotional needs - and act as their consistent point of connection.
Why it matters so much:
- Builds emotional security: Your child knows who they can go to when they need comfort, reassurance or help.
- Supports settling in: A familiar face helps ease transitions and separation anxiety.
- Tailors learning: Their key person will plan activities based on your child’s interests and next steps.
- Strengthens communication: You’ll have a direct link to someone who really knows your child and can share honest, helpful updates.
- Promotes confidence: Children thrive when they feel seen, understood and supported.
What to expect from your child’s key person at Step Start:
- A warm welcome at drop-off and end of day
- Regular updates through the Famly app
- Observations and developmental insights
- Support with transitions (room changes, school readiness, home events)
- Partnership with you to discuss routines, behaviours or anything you’re unsure about
How you can build a strong connection too:
- Chat at drop-off and pick-up when you can, even if it’s briefly
- Share changes at home (new sibling, sleep changes, any big events)
- Ask questions, we love to talk to you about your child!
- Celebrate the small wins together, your child will sense the shared excitement
It’s a relationship built on trust
The key person system isn’t just about organisation - it’s about connection. When your child feels secure in their relationship with their key person, they’re more likely to explore, take risks and thrive. And when you feel supported as a parent, it makes the whole nursery journey a little lighter.
